    The priest prepares in the late afternoon for the ceremony that will come after nightfall. The Northern Hill Tribe people originate from Tibet, and their religious symbolism reflects the Tibetian culture.

    The priest leads the people in the ceremonial rituals including prayers and incantations. Wood and cotton offerings, prepared during the day, are offered up to the spirits.

    Cotton string is tied around the wrists and blessings are said to releave people of sickness, ill fortune, and other troubles. Blessings are also given out of respect and welcome. Strings were tied around my wrists and blessings were said. In addition, I was given cotton strings to bless and give back to the people when I returned in the fulture.

    After the ceremony, the Head Man starts the dancing with an ancient Chinese flute.

    The Head Man exchanges the flute for a drum and leads the people in dancing that goes late into the night.

    Dancers pick up various instruments as they join in to keep the rhythm as the pace increases. I was told that one person suffering from depression showed marked improvement by the next day, due to the blessings and cotton string. Her husband had left her weeks earlier and moved to the city, and she had been too depressed to take care of her child.

Festival of the First Moon - Lahu Village
In 2003 I stayed in a Lahu village in Northern Thailand. The last night of my visit, the members of the village celebrated the festival of the new moon.
